Since 2012, the National Quality Framework – commonly known as the NQF - has lifted the bar for early childhood education and care services in Australia. From 1 January 2016, centre-based services under the NQF in Queensland will transition to new educator-to-child ratios for some age ranges. In Queensland, there will also be changes for family day care providers. The research shows that educator qualifications and educator-to-child ratios support quality experiences for young children. This presentation covers the key changes, and gives a recap on calculating ratios for mixed-age settings and explores the differences between ratios and adequate supervision. Educator-to-child ratios are NOT the only consideration in determining appropriate staffing in a service. Services must ensure adequate supervision is maintained at all times, including supervision of educators under 18 years of age (Regulation 120 of the National Regulations). Educator-to-child ratios are minimum standards and when considering ratios and ages of children, it is important to factor all seven Quality Areas and the possible impacts on a service's assessment and rating outcome.
